Your baby in week 42

Your baby measures around 51.7 centimetres and weighs about 3,650 grams. It is fully developed and completely ready to be born – now it is just a matter of coming into the world.

The skin may be a little dry or flaky, because most of the vernix is gone. The nails and hair may be quite long. Your baby lies well down in the pelvis, ready for birth.

Your baby still makes movements, which you should be able to feel. The placenta and amniotic fluid are now monitored closely to ensure your baby continues to do well until birth.

Your body and symptoms in week 42

In week 42 induction is offered in the public system if labour hasn't started, to look after both you and your baby. Your midwife and doctor plan it safely together with you.

You are at the very end and carry a large, heavy bump. The downward pressure, pelvic pain, tiredness and impatience are at their peak – but there is only a short time left.

Keep feeling your baby's movements right up to the birth. With clearly fewer movements, waters breaking or contractions, contact the maternity unit immediately.

Good advice for week 42

Birth is imminent. Rest, eat well, and keep your energy in reserve – you'll soon need it to meet your baby.

Look forward to it – you're almost there

After the long wait you are right at the finish. Very soon you'll hold your baby in your arms for the very first time.

Frequently asked questions in week 42

Why is labour induced in week 42?

After week 42 the risk that the placenta isn't working optimally rises. Induction is therefore offered to look after your baby if labour hasn't started on its own.

How does induction work?

There are several methods – from ripening the cervix to breaking the waters and a contraction drip. Your midwife and doctor choose what suits you and follow you closely throughout.

Is my baby still safe in week 42?

Your baby is monitored closely now with check-ups and scans. As long as all is well it is safe, but this is exactly why induction is offered, so the pregnancy doesn't go unnecessarily far past term.
