The three trimesters

Forty weeks is a long time – and each third has a character all of its own.

You are here

1st trimester

Week 1–13 Everything takes shape

In just twelve weeks your baby goes from a single cell to a tiny human with heart, brain, arms and legs. You feel nausea, tiredness and hormonal chaos – but inside, the biggest work of the whole pregnancy is happening.

2nd trimester

Week 14–27 The good time

Nausea eases for most, energy returns and the bump begins to show. Around weeks 16-22 many begin to feel the first movements, and suddenly the pregnancy isn't just something you know, but also something you can feel.

3rd trimester

Week 28–40+ Ready to meet

Your baby gains weight, practises breathing and slowly gets ready for life outside the womb. You get heavier, sleep worse and think about the birth every day. This is also when the memories are captured – the face in 3D and the bump as a sculpture.

Your public care pathway

This is what a standard Danish pregnancy pathway looks like. Enter your date above to see how far along you are.

  1. 🩺
    Week 6–10

    First visit to your GP

At the first pregnancy check-up you talk about your health and pregnancy. Among other things your blood pressure is measured, your urine is checked and blood samples are taken. This is also where the doctor sets up your pregnancy record (vandrejournal).

  2. 🧪
    Week 8–14

    Double test (blood sample)

This blood test is combined with the nuchal scan in the first-trimester risk assessment. It must be taken at least a week before the scan so the result is ready.

  3. 🖥️
    Week 11–14

    Nuchal translucency scan

Offered at the hospital between 11+4 and 13+6 weeks.

  4. 👩‍⚕️
    Week 13–16

    First midwife appointment

You get to know your midwife and make the first plans for the pregnancy and birth. The midwife asks about many aspects of you as a pregnant woman to assess which care you should be offered in the public system. All pregnant women are offered a glucose tolerance test later in pregnancy, and here it is assessed whether you should have it earlier than usual.

  5. 🔎
    Week 18–20

    Anomaly scan

The detailed review of your baby's organs at the hospital. The sex can often be seen here, if conditions allow.

  6. 🩺
    Week 25

    Second visit to your GP

Here your blood pressure and urine are measured, and the doctor asks how the pregnancy is going and how you are feeling.

  7. 💉
    Week 29

    Second midwife appointment

At this appointment you often talk about breastfeeding and whether it is something you would like to do. It is also here that you are offered anti-D if you are rhesus negative and expecting a rhesus-positive baby.

  8. 🩺
    Week 32

    Third visit to your GP

The last routine GP visit before the birth – from here on you see your midwife.

  9. 📆
    Week 35–41

    More frequent midwife visits

Visits become more frequent in the run-up to the birth and take place roughly every two weeks.

  10. 🏖️
    Week 36

    Maternity leave

As the mother you can generally start maternity leave 4 weeks before your due date. Some are entitled to start earlier through their collective agreement.

  11. 🏥
    Week 41–42

Check-up and plan at the birth unit

If you go past your due date, you are offered a check-up and a plan for the way forward. Induction may be offered depending on the pregnancy and the birth unit's guidelines.
