Pregnant in week 34
In week 34 your baby is the size of a cantaloupe. The vernix – the white layer that protects the skin – thickens, and your baby busily practises breathing movements. From this week an "Up or down" scan can confirm whether the head is down.

Your baby in week 34
Your baby measures around 45 centimetres and weighs about 2,150 grams. The fat layers thicken, so your baby can better retain heat after birth, and the skin becomes lighter and less transparent.
The protective vernix thickens, while the downy hair disappears. Your baby practises breathing, sucking and swallowing and prepares for life outside the uterus.
The central nervous system and lungs continue to mature. If your baby is born from now, it usually does well, though it may need a little extra help in the first days.
Your body and symptoms in week 34
You are now in the final weeks, and your body is preparing in earnest. Your baby may begin to settle into the pelvis, which can ease your breathing but increase the pressure on your bladder.
Pelvic pain, tiredness and trouble sleeping are common. Braxton Hicks contractions can become stronger. Watch for real labour signs, which from week 37 are no longer considered premature.
Your midwife follows you closely and checks your baby's position. If your baby isn't head-down, you discuss the options. An "Up or down" scan with us can give quick clarity.
Good advice for week 34
Check your baby's position
From week 34 an "Up or down" scan can confirm whether your baby lies correctly head-down. It gives reassurance before the final weeks.
Know the signs of labour
Regular increasing contractions, waters breaking and a bloody mucus plug are signs that labour is approaching. Before week 37 you should react to them immediately.
Rest and gather strength
The last weeks are about saving energy. Sleep when you can, take short breaks, and let others handle the heavy tasks.
Have your bag and plan ready
Your hospital bag, car seat and birth plan should be ready now, so you can leave without stress when the time comes.
Checklists for this stage
Tick things off as you go – the list remembers where you got to, and you can share it with your partner.

Frequently asked questions in week 34
What is an "Up or down" scan?
It is a quick scan where we check whether your baby lies head-down or head-up. It gives peace of mind before birth and can be done from week 34.
Is it dangerous to give birth now?
Babies born at week 34 usually do well but may need a little extra help with breathing and warmth in the first days. Each extra week strengthens their maturity.
Why do I need to pee so often again?
When your baby settles into the pelvis, the head presses on the bladder. This causes frequent urination but is also a sign your body is preparing for birth.
