Your baby in week 31

Your baby measures around 41 centimetres and weighs about 1,500 grams. It grows quickly and puts on fat, becoming rounder and more ready for life outside.

All five senses now work. Your baby reacts to sound, light, taste and touch and often turns its head towards light that filters in. It has wake and sleep periods with a clear rhythm.

The brain forms connections at a high pace, and your baby can process information from the senses. The lungs continue to mature but are not quite finished.

Your body and symptoms in week 31

Breathlessness is common now, because the large uterus presses upwards against the diaphragm and leaves less room for the lungs. It often eases in the last weeks, when your baby settles into the pelvis.

The breasts may begin to produce colostrum, and some notice a little leaking. It is a normal sign that your body is preparing for breastfeeding.

Tiredness, trouble sleeping and frequent toilet trips continue. Braxton Hicks contractions may come more often but are still short and painless. If they become regular and painful, get them assessed.

Good advice for week 31

Take it easy with breathlessness

Good posture gives the lungs the most room. Rise calmly, take breaks, and don't push yourself – it eases when your baby settles down.

Consider breastfeeding

It is a good time to read about breastfeeding and the postnatal period. Your breasts are already preparing with the first colostrum.

Keep moving

Calm walks and light exercise keep your circulation and mood up and prepare your body for the birth. Listen to what your body can manage.

Plan your leave

Now is a good time to sort out leave, paperwork and work arrangements, so the final weeks can be spent on calm and preparation.

Frequently asked questions in week 31

Why is fluid leaking from my breasts?

It is colostrum, the first nourishing milk. A little leaking already now is completely normal and a good sign your body is preparing to breastfeed.

Can I do anything about the breathlessness?

Good posture, calm and breaks help. It is due to lack of space and is harmless, but with sudden severe breathlessness or chest pain, seek help.

When does my baby turn head-down?

Most turn between weeks 30 and 36. If your baby is still head-up closer to term, your midwife will discuss the options with you.
