Pregnant in week 14
Welcome to the second trimester! In week 14 your baby is the size of a lemon. It now makes facial expressions and little grimaces, and the sex is starting to be visible. From this week you can have a gender scan and a reassurance scan with us.

Your baby in week 14
Your baby measures around 8.7 centimetres and weighs about 65 grams. The neck has lengthened, so the head sits more freely, and the body straightens more and more.
The facial muscles now work, so your baby can frown, squint and make little grimaces – pure training of the muscles it will later use. It can also suck its thumb and make swallowing movements.
The external genitals are now developed enough that the sex can often be seen on a scan. Fine, soft hair (lanugo) begins to cover the body, and your baby is developing clear eyebrows.
Your body and symptoms in week 14
The second trimester is under way, and for many this is when energy really returns. Nausea is usually gone, appetite is back, and many experience the familiar pregnancy glow.
Your bump slowly begins to show, and the uterus can be felt some way above the pubic bone. Some get a dark line (linea nigra) down over the belly, which is completely harmless and fades after birth.
If you are curious about the sex, from this week we can perform a gender scan with a gender guarantee. Many combine it with a reassurance scan to see that all is well between the public check-ups.
Good advice for week 14
Consider a gender scan
From this week the sex can be seen reliably, and with us a gender guarantee is included. It is a lovely way to feel closer to your baby between the public scans.
Eat for energy and iron
With your appetite back it is time for a varied, nutritious diet. Iron from meat, beans and green vegetables counteracts the tiredness that can come with rising blood volume.
Care for the skin on your bump
As the bump grows, the skin can tighten and itch. A moisturiser soothes, even though it can't prevent stretch marks, which are hereditary.
Sleep well while you can
The second trimester is often the best period for sleep. Start getting used to sleeping on your side, which is recommended later in pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions in week 14
How reliable is a gender scan this week?
From week 15 we can determine the sex with high reliability, and with us there is a gender guarantee. Your baby's position can occasionally make it hard to see – in which case you get a new appointment – free of charge.
What is a reassurance scan?
A scan where we calmly check that your baby is thriving, the heart is beating, and development is as expected. It supplements the public scans and gives peace of mind.
When can others see that I am pregnant?
The bump typically becomes visible to others between weeks 14 and 20, often earlier if it isn't your first pregnancy. There is great variation from person to person.
