Pregnant in week 13
Week 13 is the last week of the first trimester. Your baby is the size of a peach, the fingerprints have formed, and it can put a thumb in its mouth. Next week the second trimester begins – for many the most comfortable time in the whole pregnancy.

Your baby in week 13
Your baby measures around 7.4 centimetres and weighs about 50 grams. The body now grows faster than the head, so the proportions begin to look more like a newborn's.
The very fine fingerprints have formed, and your baby can bend its fingers and put a thumb in its mouth. The vocal cords are forming, and the intestines, which for a time sat in the umbilical cord, have now moved into place in the abdomen.
The bones continue to harden, and the scalp begins to form the pattern the hair will later grow along. Your baby moves lively, but is still too small for you to feel.
Your body and symptoms in week 13
At the transition into the second trimester, nausea and fatigue lift for most, and many find their energy and appetite returning. The risk of miscarriage has now dropped markedly.
The uterus has grown above the pelvic rim, and a small, firm bump can be sensed just above the pubic bone. Some already need slightly looser clothes.
Blood volume continues to rise, and you may experience a stuffy nose or light nosebleeds as the mucous membranes swell. The skin can darken in places, for example as a line down over the belly.
Good advice for week 13
Look forward to the second trimester
For most, the next months become the most comfortable: more energy, less nausea and a bump that isn't heavy yet. Use the time for what you feel like.
Switch to maternity clothes in time
If trousers feel tight, don't wait too long for soft, stretchy clothes. It is more comfortable than squeezing into the old ones.
Keep exercising
Walking, swimming and light strength training strengthen the back and pelvic floor for the growing bump. Avoid contact sports and activities with a risk of falling.

Frequently asked questions in week 13
Is the miscarriage risk gone now?
No pregnancy is entirely without risk, but after weeks 12-13 the risk of miscarriage drops considerably. It is one of the reasons many share the news now.
When can I find out the sex?
From week 15 (14+0) we can perform a gender scan with a gender guarantee. Before that the genitals are too similar to be determined reliably.
Why is my nose stuffy?
Pregnancy hormones and increased blood flow make the nasal membranes swell. It is called pregnancy rhinitis and is harmless, though it can be a nuisance.
