Pregnant in week 16
In week 16 your baby is the size of an avocado. The muscles get stronger day by day, and the first little kicks may soon be felt – some experience them already now, especially if it isn't their first pregnancy.

Your baby in week 16
Your baby measures around 11.6 centimetres and weighs about 100 grams. The head now sits more upright, and the facial muscles are developed enough that your baby can make different expressions.
The muscles grow stronger, and the movements more purposeful. Your baby can grip, kick and turn, and the legs are long enough to give real kicks. The eyes can move slowly behind the closed lids.
The little heart now pumps around 25 litres of blood a day, and the umbilical cord supplies your baby with everything it needs. The fine downy hair and nails keep growing.
Your body and symptoms in week 16
Many begin around now to feel the very first movements – often like small bubbles, butterflies or a light fluttering low in the belly. If it is your first pregnancy, it may still take a couple of weeks.
The bump is clearly on its way for most, and the uterus can be felt roughly midway between the pubic bone and the navel. You may have gained a few kilos, and that is exactly as it should be.
The hormones can give thicker hair growth and stronger nails, but also darker skin in places. Some experience indigestion and heartburn as the growing uterus presses on the stomach.
Good advice for week 16
Feel for movements – without pressure
Movements are still irregular, so don't worry if a day passes without any. From around week 24 you learn your baby's regular pattern.
Keep your iron levels up
Tiredness can be due to low iron. An iron-rich diet and possibly a supplement as agreed with your doctor or midwife help many.
Keep moving
Walking, swimming and pregnancy yoga strengthen body and mood. They also make birth and recovery easier to get through.
Consider a gender scan
If you want to know the sex, we can see it reliably from week 15. Many choose a combined gender and reassurance scan right now, when your baby is active and clear.

Frequently asked questions in week 16
Is it dangerous to lie on my back?
Briefly it is fine. Later in pregnancy the large uterus can press on a major blood vessel if you lie flat on your back for long – which is why side-lying is recommended from the second trimester.
Can I dye my hair?
Most consider ordinary hair dye after the first trimester safe, since very little is absorbed through the skin. If in doubt, choose milder products and good ventilation.
Why does the side of my belly hurt?
It is often the round ligaments stretching as the uterus grows. It feels like sharp pulls at the sides and is harmless, though it can be uncomfortable.
