Pregnant in week 7

In week 7 your baby is the size of a blueberry, the heart has started beating, and the brain is growing at a dizzying pace. The face begins to take shape with small dark spots where the eyes will be. Hormones are running at full tilt – and mood swings are completely normal.

Your baby in week 7

Your baby measures around 1 centimetre from crown to rump. The brain develops so fast that thousands of new nerve cells form every minute, and the head therefore still makes up much of the tiny body.

The arms and legs have grown longer and developed small paddle-shaped ends where hands and feet will form. The face slowly gains features: dark spots mark the eyes, and there are small dents where nostrils and ears are forming.

The heart has started beating at around 6+0 – about 110 beats a minute – and can be seen as a small flicker at an early scan, most clearly from 6+3.

Internal organs such as the kidneys and liver are forming, and the umbilical cord is now clear, connecting your baby to the growing placenta.

Your body and symptoms in week 7

The hormones – especially progesterone and hCG – are working at full tilt, and it can be felt both physically and emotionally. Mood swings, where you go from joy to tears in minutes, are completely common and not something you can think your way out of.

Nausea, fatigue and tender breasts continue for most. Some get increased saliva or a metallic taste in the mouth, and many find that certain smells or foods are suddenly unbearable.

The uterus has roughly doubled in size, but your belly still looks the same. Your trousers may feel a little tighter, though, because of bloating.

Good advice for week 7

Take your mood seriously

Big emotional swings are normal, but if you feel persistently low or anxious, talk to your doctor or midwife. Wellbeing is an important part of pregnancy.

Rest your eyes and body

Fatigue peaks for many now. A short nap or just ten minutes with your feet up can make a big difference in the middle of the day.

Keep to your routines

Regular meals and sleep keep both nausea and mood more stable. Your body prefers predictability right now.

Share it with someone

Even though many wait to share the big news, it can help to have one confidant to share both the joy and the symptoms with in the early, symptom-heavy phase.

Frequently asked questions in week 7

Are mood swings a bad sign?

No. They are caused by the powerful hormonal changes and say nothing about how you'll handle parenthood. They typically ease as your body adjusts to the hormone levels.

When can you hear the heartbeat?

On a scan the heart can be seen beating from around week 6+0, and from week 12+0 you can also hear the heartbeat.

Can I drink coffee?

Yes, but in limited amounts. The Danish Health Authority recommends no more than 200 mg of caffeine a day in pregnancy – roughly two cups of coffee.
