Pregnant in week 15

In week 15 your baby is the size of an apple. It can now sense light from outside, even though the eyes are still closed, and it busily practises moving its arms and legs. Your bump may be starting to show.

Your baby in week 15

Your baby measures around 10 centimetres and weighs about 85 grams. The legs are now longer than the arms, and the body straightens more and more, so the proportions become neater.

Even though the eyelids are still closed, your baby can sense strong light from outside. The ears are now almost in place, and the bones in the inner ear begin to harden, so the first sounds can be registered.

The skin is still thin and transparent, so the blood vessels shine through. Your baby makes many movements – stretching, kicking and rotating – but is still small enough that most can't feel it yet.

Your body and symptoms in week 15

For most, nausea is now a thing of the past, and energy has returned. Many enjoy this period, when the bump is light and energy is plentiful.

The uterus can be felt some way below the navel, and a small bump begins to show for many. Appetite is often good, and it is important to eat varied and nutritious food rather than just more.

Some experience sore or bleeding gums, a stuffy nose and mild headaches due to the increased blood volume and hormones. These are all normal companions that rarely need treatment.

Good advice for week 15

Enjoy the second-trimester energy

Many now feel their greatest energy of the whole pregnancy. It is a good time for travel, projects and keeping up with exercise.

Eat varied and iron-rich food

Your body builds blood and tissue at a high pace. Iron from meat, lentils and green vegetables together with vitamin C keeps your blood levels up.

Look after your back

As the bump grows, your posture changes. Good posture, flat shoes and a little back exercise prevent pain later.

Frequently asked questions in week 15

When do you feel the first kicks?

Most feel the first movements between weeks 16 and 22. In a first pregnancy it is often later, because you don't yet know what to feel for.

Is it safe to sleep on my stomach?

Yes, as long as it is comfortable. As the bump grows it becomes uncomfortable on its own, and from the second trimester sleeping on your side is recommended.

Can I travel while pregnant?

The second trimester is often the best time to travel. Talk to your doctor about longer flights or travel to areas with particular health risks.
