Which scan, and when?

Some weeks there is something to see, other weeks there is not. Here are our scans week by week – alongside what you are already offered in the public system, so you can see what adds to what.

How far along are you?
  1. Before pregnancyYou are here

    Before you start

A fertility scan gives a picture of the ovaries and uterus before you start. It comes with or without a medical record.

  2. Weeks 5–9You are here

    The first weeks

From week 5+0 we can see the pregnancy itself and confirm that it is in the right place. The heart starts beating around week 6, and from week 6+3 to 7 we can usually see it clearly. If you are unsure how far along you are, choose a day or two later.

In the public systemThe first visit to your doctor falls in weeks 6–10. This is where your maternity record is created.

  3. Weeks 10–14You are here

    Genetic testing and nuchal scan

If you want to know more about the chromosomes, now is the time. A NIPT is a blood sample from you and can be taken from week 10+0.

In the public systemThe double test (blood sample) in weeks 8–14 and the nuchal translucency scan in weeks 11+4 to 13+6 are offered at the hospital. The blood sample must be taken at least a week before the scan.

  4. Weeks 15–19You are here

    Gender and reassurance

From week 15 the sex can usually be seen reliably. From week 16 it is easier still, because the baby is bigger and lies more predictably. We do not scan for sex before week 15 – the genitals are still too similar for the answer to be reliable.

In the public systemThe first midwife appointment falls in weeks 13–16.

  5. Weeks 20–24You are here

    After the big scan

The anomaly scan at the hospital is the thorough review of the baby organs, and we do not replace it. A reassurance scan with us is for the weeks in between, if your next appointment is a long way off.

In the public systemThe anomaly scan in weeks 18–20 at the hospital. The sex can often be seen here, if conditions allow.

  6. Weeks 25–33You are here

    3D and 4D

Around week 28 is best. From week 25 the face has started to fill out, and up to week 33 there is still enough amniotic fluid in front of it for a sharp image. After week 33 it gets cramped. If you are expecting twins, come in weeks 26–28 rather than later.

In the public systemSecond visit to your doctor in week 25 and to the midwife in week 29.

  7. Weeks 32–36You are here

    Your bump as a figure

Between weeks 32 and 36 the bump and the shape of your body stand out most clearly. Stork Shape is a scan of your bump that becomes a figure you can display.

In the public systemThird visit to your doctor in week 32.

  8. Week 34 to birthYou are here

Is the baby the right way up?

From week 34 and for the rest of the pregnancy we can see whether the baby is head down. Around 3-4 % are in breech position at birth, and many turn by themselves right up to the birth.

In the public systemFrom week 35 the midwife appointments become more frequent, roughly every other week.

  9. Any timeYou are here

The weeks are a guide. If you are unsure what suits you, call or write – we would rather move an appointment than scan too early. Our scans do not replace what the public system offers; they sit alongside it.

Frequently asked questions

When can you see the heartbeat?

The heart starts beating around week 6, and from week 6+3 to 7 we can usually see it clearly. If you are unsure how far along you are, choose a day or two later – that gives the best chance of seeing it the first time.

When can you see the sex?

From week 15 (14+0) the sex can usually be seen reliably, and from week 16 it is easier still. We do not scan for sex before week 15, because the genitals are still too similar for the answer to be reliable.

When is 3D/4D best?

Around week 28. From week 25 the face has started to fill out, and up to week 33 there is still enough amniotic fluid in front of it for a sharp image. After week 33 it gets cramped. If you are expecting twins, come in weeks 26–28 rather than later.

What does the public system offer?

A double test (blood sample) in weeks 8–14, a nuchal translucency scan in weeks 11+4 to 13+6 and an anomaly scan in weeks 18–20, plus the doctor and midwife appointments. Our scans do not replace those; they sit alongside them.

Do I need a referral?

No. You book online yourself and pay at the clinic. There is no deposit.

How late can you be scanned?

A reassurance scan can be booked right up to the birth. From week 34 we can also see whether the baby is head down.

Can I come the same day if I am worried?

Yes. We keep urgent slots that are fitted in between the other appointments. Call or write and we will find a time.
