A cervical scan is for anyone with frequent Braxton Hicks contractions, a previous preterm birth or a feeling of pressure. We measure the length of the cervix and check the baby's position in the pelvis – both vaginally and externally.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time?
A cervical scan makes most sense between week 16 and week 34, while a short cervix is still something that can be acted on. If you have given birth prematurely before, or have been told you have a short cervix, measuring at regular intervals may be worthwhile. If you also have regular contractions or your waters have broken, do not book with us – go to the labour ward.
Does it hurt?
No. The measurement is taken with a slim vaginal probe and feels like an ordinary gynaecological examination. It is painless and done as gently and briefly as possible.
What counts as a normal length?
Above 25 mm is generally considered normal before week 24. We always put the figure in the context of how far along you are and what your history is – and you get the answer straight away, while you are still lying there.
